Mother Tongue Language
đź’ˇ Skills Development
At Outram Secondary School, the Mother Tongue Language Curriculum plays a pivotal role in nurturing our students to become confident communicators of their own language, critical thinkers and culturally grounded individuals.
Rooted to the Secondary MTL Syllabus, our programme emphasises the three core pillars of Communication, Culture and Connection, while systematically developing essential E21CC that empower students to thrive in an ever changing world.
Through the learning of MTL, students hone critical and inventive thinking, effective communication, and collaborative skills. Classroom discussions, literary analyses, and the exploration of contemporary issues encourage students to engage in thoughtful dialogue, make reasoned arguments, and appreciate multiple perspectives. Students also cultivate creativity by expressing their understanding through drama, multimedia presentations, and writing tasks.
Our programme adopts a learner-centred and inquiry-based approach that promotes authentic, hands-on learning. Students explore real-world topics and cultural themes through projects, collaborative writing, and contextualised discussion of literary texts and current affairs.
By tapping into interdisciplinary connections and drawing relevance to students’ daily lives, MTL learning becomes vibrant and meaningful. Students investigate societal issues, analyse cultural practices, and create purposeful artefacts such as formal emails, public service announcements, or social media content—all while applying their language skills in context.
We are committed to providing a Mother Tongue Language experience that goes beyond the classroom—one that is joyful, enriching, and future-ready. Our students emerge not only as proficient users of their mother tongue but as dynamic individuals empowered to make meaningful contributions to society.
🚀 Signature Programmes
Mother Tongue Fortnight Activities/Camp
The Mother Tongue Fortnight (MTLFN) and the Language and Cultural Camp (LCC) are signature programmes that bring our MTL curriculum to life. These platforms are designed to immerse students in authentic and meaningful experiences that allow them to appreciate their mother tongue as a living language deeply rooted in culture and identity. Through hands-on activities such as workshops, performances, cultural exhibitions, storytelling, and drama, students actively use their MTL in real-world contexts while engaging with its rich traditions and contemporary relevance. These programmes not only nurture language proficiency but also cultivate a deeper sense of identity, empathy, and cross-cultural appreciation—preparing our students to become confident, culturally grounded, and future-ready contributors to society.
